Lasik

Lasik is one of the most groundbreaking techniques used with eye problems today.

Lasik stands for Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. This is a process where a small top layer of the cornea is cut to create a flap so the cornea can be reshaped to correct vision problems. Special equipment is used to cut the flap and then hold it in place while a computer laser is used to reshape the cornea. The laser eliminates small portions of the cornea that is the problem for blurry vision associated with farsightedness and nearsightedness. Lasik surgery allows better vision without the need of contact lenses or glasses.

Lasik surgery is a surgical procedure and like all surgeries, some risks are involved. Before a person can have Lasik surgery, they must first be seen by a physician to ensure they are good candidates for the procedure.

Some of the things you should be ready to hear from your doctor if you are planning to have Lasik surgery are the following. If you wear contact lenses, you will have to switch back to glasses for two weeks prior to surgery. Contact lenses change the shape of the cornea and for Lasik surgery to be a success, your cornea should have its normal or original shape. If you smoke or drink alcohol beverages, your doctor will also ask that you quit smoking and that you limit your alcohol intake.

When you visit your doctor for your evaluation, you should be prepared to answer all of his or her questions pertaining to medications you are now taking such as type, dosage, and frequency. If you are now taking any over the counter medications or herbal supplements. He will also need to know if you have any type of allergies. Your overall health should be evaluated and if you have a history of any illnesses this should be discussed with your doctor.

Once your doctor has confirmed that you are a good candidate for Lasik surgery he or she will give you a few more pointers and instructions that you need to do prior to surgery including not using any perfume, lotions, creams, facial makeup, or cologne at least 24 hours prior to surgery. Any of these items pose threats for infection.

After Lasik surgery, you will not be able to drive yourself home, therefore you should bring along a friend or family member. Your vision will still be a bit blurry and you will be wearing a small shield over your eye to protect it from being bumped or injured. You will have to wear the shield until the flap that was created has time to heal. Your doctor may also prescribe something for pain. Do not worry your doctor will explain how long you must wear the shield and when you will be able to drive again.
